ACE Demo Project

The first of several interactive and participatory exhibits arrived at the museum on 6 February 2003. After assembly and testing they became the cornerstone of an in-house demonstration project to test the feasibility and audience response to the idea of creating a fully-fledged Aerospace Center for Education facility on the museum grounds.

ACE Exhibits

The five ACE sections will be comprised of several highly interactive exhibits to answer specific questions related to their fundamental principles. ACE

The Aerospace Center for Education (ACE) at Hill Aerospace Museum was developed by the museum staff and volunteers with the assistance of the Utah Chapter of the Aerospace Education Foundation, the Ute-Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Air Force Association, and the Aerospace Heritage Foundation of Utah.

Robert Crawford

In 1938, Liberty magazine sponsored a contest for a spirited, enduring musical composition to become the official Army Air Corps song. Of 757 scores submitted, the one composed by Robert MacArthur Crawford (1899-1961) was selected by a committee of Air Force wives.

Chapel Interior

Today the original Hill Field Chapel stands majestically on the museum grounds, retired from "active duty" as a religious facility, but still serving proudly. It is open for viewing every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

Chapel Monuments

The museum's Memorial Park surrounds the Chapel, covering several acres. It contains monuments placed by various organizations, such as the 5th Air Force, the 8th Air Force, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The placement of these memorials is also coordinated by the Aerospace Heritage Foundation of Utah.

Stained Glass

Today the Chapel houses the 384th Bomb Group Memorial Stained Glass Window, an exact duplicate of a memorial stained glass window donated by the 384th Bomb Group to the Parish Church of St. James the Apostle in the village of Grafton Underwood, near Kettering, England. (Hill Field was the parent base of Wendover Army Air Field in western Utah, where the 384th trained in 1943 in Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses for action in Europe in World War II. Grafton Underwood was near USAAF Station 106, home base of the 384th in the European theater of operations during the war.)

Memorial Chapel

Overlooking the northwest entrance to Hill Air Force Base, the original base chapel building is the centerpiece of Hill Aerospace Museum's Memorial Park. This beautiful Chapel and surrounding park are dedicated to the memory of the men and women of the United States military who served our country in war and in peacetime, at Hill Air Force Base and elsewhere around the world

B-24

By late 1943 there were approximately 2,000 civilian employees and 17,500 military personnel at Wendover. Construction at the base continued for most of the war, and by May 1945 the base consisted of 668 buildings, including a 300-bed hospital, gymnasium, swimming pool, library, chapel, cafeteria, bowling alley, two movie theatres, and 361 housing units for married officers and civilians.

Wendover Field 2

President Franklin Roosevelt authorized the expansion of the Wendover range in February 1941, increasing its size by 262,200 acres. That spring the War Department allotted $1 million for grading, drainage, paving, and night lighting projects at Wendover and in the summer a Bombing and Gunnery Range Detachment was activated as a sub-post of Fort Douglas.

The airfield, established in early 1920, was chosen for its "strategic and topographical advantages" and because the required enlargements could be easily accommodated by the vacant land surrounding it.

Ogden Ordnance Depot

On 1 February 1938 the revitalized Ogden Ordnance Depot, the only Army ammunition plant west of the Mississippi, began producing its first bombs, and on 16 September 1938 Army officials rededicated the newly reconstructed and rehabilitated Ogden Ordnance Depot. Later that same year President Roosevelt authorized an initial expenditure of $55,608 to begin construction of an air depot on a parcel of land belonging to the Ogden Ordnance Depot.

Ogden Arsenal

During the First World War munitions of all types were consumed at unprecedented rates. Large-scale production of artillery shells and small arms ammunition were undertaken in the United States by over 8,000 ordnance manufacturers, which turned out millions of rounds.

Lt Walter Harvey & Lt Nate Mazer

Only two aircraft in the entire Eighth Air Force were ever named after individuals and both of them were in the 384th Bomb Group. Lieutenant Walter Harvey (left) was known as "Big Dog" and B-17 42-102661 SU-L was named in his honor after he was shot down. Lieutenant Nathan "Mike" Mazer (right) was a squadron armaments officer, but went on many combat missions unofficially. As he was Jewish, B-17 42-98000 SU-J was named "Fightin' Hebe" as a tribute to his spirit.

B-17 Wendover

The 384th Bombardment Group (Heavy) was "activated" (brought into existence by the assignment of personnel) on 1 December 1942 at Gowen Field, Idaho. Comprised of the 544th, 545th, 546th, and 547th Bombardment Squadrons, the 384th was assigned to Wendover Field, Utah, on 2 January 1943 to begin training in B-17s for combat in the European Theatre of Operations.
