Ruth Law

Ruth Bancroft Law (1887-1970) Ruth Law, who received her pilot's license in 1912, was an accomplished flyer who had set the American nonstop cross-country record for men and women and the world nonstop cross-country for women in November 1916 while flying from Chicago to New York. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, Ruth Law volunteered to fly for the Army but was turned down. Even though their offers were dismissed by the Secretary of War with the statement "We don't want women in the Army," many women aviators wanted to contribute to the war effort.

Janet Bragg

Janet Harmon Bragg (1907-1993) In 1943 Bragg applied for duty with the Women Airforce Service Pilots but was rejected because of her race. She attended instead the Civilian Pilot Training Program flight school at Tuskegee, Alabama, intending to obtain a commercial pilot's license. She successfully completed the course work and flight tests, but was prevented from receiving her license by a bigoted instructor. Not to be deterred, she went to Chicago, where she passed the examination and earned the first commercial pilot's license ever issued to a black woman.

William Edward Boeing 1881-1956 Boeing started his professional life as a lumberman and ended as a real-estate developer and horse breeder, but in between he founded the company that brought forth important breakthroughs in the field of aviation technology and the airline business. The Boeing Airplane Company became one of the signature corporations of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest and dominated the regional economy for most of the twentieth century.

Iris Thaden

Iris Louise McPhetridge Thaden (1905-1979) Louise Thaden, a close friend and competitor of Amelia Earhart, was the first woman to win the Bendix Trophy. Flying a Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing with her copilot Blanche Noyes, Thaden captured the 1936 Bendix race from New York to Los Angeles with a flight that took 14 hours and 55 minutes.

Nancy Love

Nancy Harkness Love (1914-1976) In 1943 the WAFS merged with the Women's Flying Training Detachment, under the leadership of Jacqueline Cochran, into a new organization called the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). While Cochran was given command of the WASP, Love was put in charge of all ferrying operations. Under her command, female pilots flew almost every military aircraft then in service. In over 12,000 ferry flights her pilots flew 9.2 million miles, with a better safety record than male pilots. For her efforts Love received the Air Medal.

Chauncey Spencer

Chauncey Edward Spencer (1906-2002) In May 1939, he and fellow aviator Dale Lawrence White, also an NAAA member, flew a rented Lincoln-Paige biplane--with only two flight instruments--on a ten-city tour that started in Chicago and ended in Washington, DC. Realizing that war in Europe was eminent, their aim was to demonstrate the aviation abilities of "negroes" and to lobby Congress for inclusion of people of color in the Civilian Pilot Training Program for the Army Air Corps.

Major General William E. Creer

Maj. Gen. William Edward Creer flew 170 combat missions against the enemy over continental Europe. Flying the B-17, General Creer participated in 17 bombing missions as a command combat pilot. Immediately following V-E Day the 34th flew mercy missions, dropping huge cargos of foodstuffs to starving thousands in Holland.

Sikorsky MH-53M

This aircraft, S/N 68-10369, was originally manufactured as an HH-53C by Sikorsky Aircraft in Bridgeport, Connecticutt, and gained by the Air Force on March 23, 1971. It was first assigned to the Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Center, Military Air Transport Service, at Eglin AFB, Florida. In May 1971 is was transfered to the 1550th Aircrew Training & Test Wing, Military Airlift Command, at Hill AFB. It moved to the 6594th Test Group, AF Systems Command, at Hickam AFB, Hawaii, in June 1974.

MH-53M

The MH-53 helicopters were originally HH-53 "Super Jolly Green Giants" used by the U.S. Air Force in the Southeast Asia War. Over the years, however, they received many upgrades and improvements. After the 1960s, they were completely re-skinned and had their engines and rotors replaced. Along with these improvements came a new designation, MH-53 ("M" for Multi-mission and "H" for helicopter).
