Colonel Walter T. Stewart, during World War II he was a B-24 pilot, flying 236 hours of combat. Of the 32 combat missions he flew, the most historic was the low-level bombing mission to the oil refineries of Ploesti, Romania, on 1 August 1943.

Brig Gen Sanders

Brigadier General Richard Condie Sanders, selected for the famous Halverson Detachment of B-24 crews, Sanders was deployed in early 1942 to Egypt to help stem the onslaught of Rommel's Afrika Korps, then at the gates of Cairo. He led his squadron in dozens of bombing raids at Tobruk, Bhengazi, Tripoli, and shipping in the Mediterranean, as well as the famous battle of El Alamain which sealed the fate Axis forces in Africa. He later commanded a B-26 group in Europe's Ninth Air Division, became its Chief of Staff, and ultimately its commander. In June 1944 he was promoted to Brigadier General, becoming at age 29 the youngest general officer in our armed forces. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and medals from Belgium, France, and Luxembourg. General Sanders was a native of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Senator Garn

Senator E. J. "Jake" Garn, Senator Garn was born in Richfield, Utah, and attended local public schools. He subsequently graduated from the University of Utah and served in the United States Navy as a pilot. He later served in the Utah Air National Guard, logging over 10,000 flying hours and retiring as a Brigadier General. Garn served as a Salt Lake City Commissioner and Mayor, and was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Salt Lake City International Airport Master Plan. Garn served three terms in the United States Senate, working tirelessly for a strong national defense. Senator Garn's actions were instrumental in providing funds for critical military aviation programs. In 1984 he was a crewmember on the 7 day space shuttle flight STS 51-D. In 1992 he was awarded the prestigious Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy
