HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- The 309th Software Engineering Group at Hill AFB celebrated the launch of two new workforce development facilities with a ribbon-cutting ceremony March 26. The initiatives are designed to prepare new employees and interns for success while awaiting security clearances and provide ongoing training and career development for the group’s existing workforce.
“The intent of these facilities is to focus on people to become a world-class software organization. After years of dedicated planning and construction starting in September 2021, that vision is now a reality,” said Chad Harper, 309th SWEG acting director, during the ceremony. “This investment wasn’t just about creating a beautiful space—it was about creating a space that empowers our teams to do their best work.”
The new facilities support the Air Force Sustainment Center Software Directorate Groups at Hill, Robins AFB, Georgia, and Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. These groups, led by Bobby L. Hager, AFSC Software Directorate director, include more than 5,500 personnel working to meet the Air Force's critical software needs.
The Launch Pad facility will engage new hires and interns by involving them in projects that refine software development skills, foster teamwork, and build leadership abilities that are transferable when they move into their permanent team within the 309th SWEG. Because security clearance processing can extend the onboarding period, the facility transforms idle time into a hands-on training opportunity. In addition, college science and engineering interns and high school volunteers will also be onboard, gaining practical experience as they work alongside full-time team members.
Software University, or SWEG U, will provide continuous training for all three SWEG groups within the AFSC Software Directorate. The newly renovated buildings feature virtual classrooms that enhance training accessibility and enable personnel across all the locations to learn. The program will offer technical training, leadership preparation, and soft skills development, along with coaching and mentoring to support ongoing growth.
“We’re excited about the possibilities these new buildings offer as we support the Air Force’s software engineering groups,” said Brad Kartchner, Air Force Software Directorate section chief. “These spaces ensure employees across all bases can access the courses needed to become better software engineers, team members, and leaders—helping meet the growing mission demands of the Air Force.”
