Left, Col. Dan Cornelius, 75th Air Base Wing commander, and Senior Airman Michael Tumang, 75th Security Forces Squadron, stand at attention during the reading of the order awarding Tumang the Purple Heart during a ceremony April 30, 2026, at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. Tumang was presented the Purple Heart for wounds received in action Jan. 20, 2024, during a deployment to Al-Asad Air Base, Iraq. While serving as a member of the Quick Response Force during a hostile indirect fire attack, a 122 mm rocket impacted within 30 feet of Tumang's position. Despite being knocked to the ground and sustaining immediate blast injuries, Tumang demonstrated unwavering resolve by pushing through the attack to execute a critical post-attack sweep of the airfield before seeking medical intervention.
