Pedestrians requested to use crosswalk Published Nov. 4, 2016 By 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- Recently, pedestrians have been observed crossing Balmer Street from visitor parking near Centennial Park on the red-and-white-striped pop-up barrier, which resembles a crosswalk, and this presents a safety hazard. If the pop-up barrier were to activate with pedestrians on it, the potential exits for severe injuries or fatalities. Signs warning pedestrians of the hazard have been posted on both sides of Balmer Street near the pop-up barrier. Base officials request that pedestrians use the painted crosswalk 25 yards west of the pop-up barrier to transit across Balmer Street between Centennial Park and the parking lots and sidewalks near the base softball fields.“The safety of our base populace is our primary concern,” said Col. Jennifer Hammerstedt, 75th Air Base Wing commander. “We’ve taken action to mitigate the risk but need your help to ensure the safety of our community members by using the painted crosswalk near this popular base location.”So far, the Centennial Park crossing is the only location where this issue has been observed. If similar issues arise at other pop-up barriers, they will be addressed as well.
