Hill firefighters and base leadership honored a Kaysville, Utah, native as an Honorary Fire Chief on his 100th birthday today.

Shirley LeRoy Ball, a retired Hill firefighter of 31 years, kept in touch and remained a friend of the fire department here for decades. Ball's 100th birthday was also celebrated during the ceremony where he was presented with a momento and certificate recognizing him as Hill's first ever Honorary Fire Chief.

"He has been around our firehouses for a long time and he deserves recognition for all he has given to our career field," said Paul Erickson, Hill AFB's Chief of Fire and Emergency Services. "In addition to his more than 30 years as a base firefighter, Chief Ball has been a mentor to many of our Air Force firefighters."
