Hill Air Force Base will flip the switch on newly installed traffic lights at the intersection of South Gate Boulevard and Balmer Street Dec. 3.

The lights, located just inside the base's South Gate, are scheduled to be activated at noon. Base officials said the traffic signals were installed to allow better vehicle control for inbound, outbound and left-hand turns.

What motorists need to know:

- Inbound motorists intending to make northbound to westbound turn movements from South Gate Boulevard on to Balmer Street should use the newly established turn "pockets." Vehicles will not be allowed to turn without using these established turn pockets.

- With the installation of the lights, a dedicated "free right" turn lane still exists for motorists making eastbound to southbound turn movements from Balmer Street onto South Gate Boulevard exiting the base. With the free right turn lane, drivers should yield, but it remains legal to turn right from Balmer Street onto South Gate Boulevard without stopping. This lane should only be used by motorists intending to make southbound to westbound turn movements from South Gate Boulevard on to State Route 193.

Authorities said it will take some time to program the light sequencing with respect to the traffic flow. Drivers are asked to be patient during this adjustment period.
