The Department of the Air Force updated its Air Force and Space Force SkillBridge programs to balance operational readiness and transition assistance to Airmen and Guardians. This update adjusts the length of program participation into rank-specific categories and clarifies specific commander levels required to approve applications related to a service member’s rank.

These policy refinements balance the need for units to maintain operational readiness, while also ensuring eligible Airmen and Guardians can access opportunities aimed to support their transition to the civilian workforce.

DAF service members remain eligible to participate in the SkillBridge program during their last 180 days of service. The revised policies for the Air Force and Space Force limit maximum participation within that 180-day window based on the member’s rank. This new structure replaces the previous policy, which allowed a flat 180-day window for all ranks. The changes also require approvals from commanders on G-series orders, compared to previous approvals allowed at lower levels.

The Air Force SkillBridge program is structured into three categories listed below. Participation for Air Force colonels requires specific exception-to-policy approval.

U.S. Air Force SkillBridge Categories:

Category Ranks Max Participation Approval Authority
Category 1 E-1 to E-5, O-1 to O-3  120 Days 1st Field Grade Commander
Category 2  E-6 to E-7, WO to CWO-3, O-4  90 Days 1st O-6 Commander
Category 3  E-8 to E-9, CWO-4 to CWO-5, O-5  60 Days 1st O-6 Commander

The revised policy for the U.S. Space Force is structured into four categories listed below.

U.S. Space Force SkillBridge Categories:

Category Ranks Max Participation Approval Authority
Category 1 E-1 to E-5  120 Days  1st Field Grade Commander
Category 2 E-6 to E-8 120 Days 1st O-6 Commander
Category 3 O-1 to O-4  120 Days 1st O-6 Commander
Category 4 E-9, O-5 and above  90 Days 1st General Officer in chain of command

The updated SkillBridge policy is effective March 31, 2026. Airmen and Guardians who received approval to participate in SkillBridge prior to March 31, 2026, will remain under previous policy guidelines.

For more information on the SkillBridge program, Airmen and Guardians should consult their local Education and Training Offices and visit online resources on myFSS (for CAC-enabled users) and the official Department of War SkillBridge website.
