Hill Air Force Base has once again demonstrated its leadership in environmental stewardship, earning two prestigious accolades in the 2025 Department of Defense Environmental Awards.

The base was recognized in the categories of Natural Resources Conservation – Large Installation and Environmental Quality – Industrial Installation, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and operational excellence.

"The Environmental Branch’s success stems from a collaborative effort and a proactive dedication to innovative solutions,” said Amanda Burton, Environmental Branch chief. “These solutions not only reduce environmental impacts and promote legal compliance but also enhance operational efficiency and strengthen mission readiness.”

The Environmental Quality award highlights Hill’s success in advancing sustainability and minimizing industrial impacts through cutting-edge pollution prevention strategies. The base has implemented robust waste reduction programs, improved air and water quality monitoring, and adopted energy-efficient technologies that reduce its carbon footprint, including upgrading to ultra-low nitrogen oxide boilers, reducing pollution and boosting energy efficiency.

Hill oversees the only large-scale site for missile motor disposal , with strong environmental oversight. The base has deepened partnerships with 22 tribes and has helped protect 2.7 million acres through the Great Salt Lake Sentinel Landscape.

The Natural Resources Conservation award celebrates Hill AFB’s efforts to preserve and enhance its unique ecosystem. Through innovative land management practices, the base has protected native species, restored critical habitats, and promoted biodiversity across its expansive terrain. These initiatives not only safeguard the environment but also ensure the long-term viability of military training and operations.

“Our department’s achievements are part of a broader triumph for all of Team Hill,” Burton said. “Leadership’s priorities of prevention, long-term planning, and sustainable practices minimize environmental risks, protect vital resources, and guarantee mission readiness, today and for future generations."
