To bolster military deployment readiness, the Judge Advocate General established "Legal Assistance Readiness Week," to coincide with Law Day on May 1. This year, the inaugural week took place from April 28 to May 2, focusing on the legal preparedness of Airmen and Guardians.

Paralegals and attorneys from Hill Air Force Base’s legal office spent the week hosting legal clinics at various locations around the base providing education, answering questions, and offering checklist to help Airmen address legal matters before deployments.

“Every service member has their own unique circumstances and legal issues they should consider preparing for before they depart,” said Master Sgt. Devin Holmes, 75th Air Base Wing Judge Advocate superintendent. “Warfighters should think of legal readiness any time their personal circumstances change in advance of any departure from home station. Big life events from buying a home, getting married, having kids, getting a divorce, or even adopting a new pet will add complexities to military movements.”

Holmes said the legal office helps service members prepare and navigate different documents like wills, living wills, advanced medical directives, and powers of attorney, as well as other legal matters they may face.

These crucial legal documents provide service members and their families with peace of mind and security, particularly when preparing for deployments and unexpected situations.

“Legal readiness is about proactively addressing these life changes and preparing in advance,” said Holmes. “Legal concerns should not be the last thing on your mind when you grab your bags and get on the plane.”
