Congratulations to Gaylen Fish, assistant chief for operations at the Hill Air Force Base Fire and Emergency Services, who was recognized by the Air Force as Fire Officer of the Year.

“It is always nice to be recognized but this is not about me but about our teams,” Fish said. “It was a win more for our department than for myself.”

Fish said the department gets recognition in part due to its high tempo operations. They train firefighters not only from other community agencies and military services, but also from other nations, including several from Europe. They also regularly work out at the Utah Test and Training Ranges, putting out large wildfires caused by detonations.

Fish will now compete against category winners from the other Department of Defense services.
