West Gate area under construction Published Oct. 12, 2007 By Senior Airman Clay Murray 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- The second phase of the Utah Department of Transportation bridge rehabilitation affecting the Hill Air Force Base West Gate will commence Oct. 12. Traffic on Interstate 15 flowing around exit 335 will be affected. Different stages of work will take place during the second phase. Traffic on 650 North will be limited to a single lane in each direction. Traffic outbound at the West Gate will be restricted to the Interstate 15 northbound on-ramp. "The two-phased project is proceeding according to plan," said Capt. James Hagemier, 75th Security Forces Squadron operations officer. "Phase I work on the topside roadway is progressing as planned and Phase II work under the bridge is on track to begin Oct. 12. Base personnel are abiding by the posted prohibition against turning right into Hill AFB from the Northbound Interstate 15 exit, and the gates have had minimal impact from the top-side roadwork of Phase I." To help the transition for the gate and alleviate congestion in and around the base, several accommodations have been set in place. The Southwest Gate will have four lanes operating for inbound traffic 4-8 a.m., Monday-Friday. From the Southwest Gate to Liberty Avenue, Arsenal Road will be open for one-way inbound traffic 4-8 a.m., Monday-Friday. According to a recent press release by the Utah Department of Transportation, Hill AFB employees are encouraged to use the Roy Gate and Southwest Gate as alternate routes during the construction. As of Oct. 15, northbound Interstate 15 access to the base via the West Gate will be re-opened. "Plans are in place to handle extra traffic at both the Southwest and Roy gate," said Captain Hagemier, "so we recommend that base affiliates take advantage of these alternate locations to avoid significant delays at the West Gate. "The work being conducted on the overpass is important to public safety, so we continue to ask you all to be patient with delays and take full advantage of the alternate gate options we have provided you," said Captain Hagemier.
