Pillars of wellness: Social Published Oct. 18, 2007 By Capt. Genieve David 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- Military members are facing increased and longer deployments, which, means longer separations from family and friends. "To increase Air Force resiliency and efficiency we must continuously refine and build our social network, both at home and in a deployed environment," La Rue Campbell, Hill Wingman coordinator, said. "One of the most important things we can do is focus on the needs of others and by supporting others, we are supporting ourselves and our community." According to Mr. La Rue it is important that the family left behind, surround themselves with supportive, caring, and sincere people that provide encouragement. It is highly encouraged to have families prepare social networks so when they are needed they are strong, resilient and capable of weathering the storms of life, Mr. Campbell said. "Social and family resiliency strengthens our fighting force." Some suggested places in the local area that encourage social gathering are the Hill Officer and Enlisted spouses clubs, through volunteerism with agencies such as Safe Harbor in Kaysville, Your Community Connection of Ogden or either the Children Justice Centers of Farmington and/or Ogden. There are also several upcoming events that encourage social welless that families can participate in. Halloween Boo-nanza, hosted by the lifeguards at the indoor pool, is a free event on Oct. 27, 4-7 p.m. Kids are encouraged to wear their costumes. There will be games, prizes, food, candy, fortune teller, Dr. Frankenstein lab, haunted pool boat ride and more. Give Parents a Break program offers free child care for active duty families that have afamily member deployed and requests a referral from the Airman & Family Readiness Center. The Child Development Center cares for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. The Heber Valley Railroad Polar Express train ride is available on Dec. 1,8, and 15. Cost is free for children under 2, $18 per child ages 3-13, $29 for ages 13 and up. Everyone will enjoy a reading of Chris Van Allsburg's Polar Express, a visit from Santa Claus and hot chocolate. "Resiliency coupled with commitment and dedication to our American principles and value system will maintain an effective fighting force, as we continually build strong and healthy communities," Mr. Campbell said.
