New School Liaison Program at Hill Published July 28, 2008 By Edie Messina 75th Force Support Squadron HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- For the first time, Hill Air Force Base has a School Liaison Program. The program, under the direction of Judith Maughan, School Liaison Officer, was created to enhance the educational environment and opportunities for the children of parents assigned to Hill. There are many unique educational challenges facing military children including PCS moves, transitioning into new schools, transferring credits, the fear of making new friends, and parental deployments and TDYs. The goal of the School Liaison Program is to develop solutions, promote parental involvement in their children's education, and educate the local schools regarding the needs of their military students. "I'm in the process of meeting with the school superintendents and eventually I hope to meet with the principal of each school that educates military children, "said Judith Maughan. "For the parents, I'm hoping to be in contact with them before they even come to Utah so that I can provide them with information on the local school system policies, programs, and schedules." Currently, the program caters to Kindergarten through High School but in the future, it could open doors to some child care issues and definitely help some students transition into universities. According to Maughan, many bases overseas have the School Liaison Program as well as state side bases including Luke, Dover, and Langley. As for Hill Air Force Base, this is the beginning of a partnership between the installation and the community. For more information, email Judith.Maughan@hill.af.mil or call 775-5960.
