HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- Meet Travis Dunaj, a work lead with the 531st Commodities Maintenance Squadron, in the 309th Commodities Maintenance Group at Hill Air Force Base. Travis, who has spent the last six and a half years with CMXG, rebuilds pneudraulic flight controls for the A10s, F15s, F-16s, F-22s, T-38s, and F-5s.
Travis was born and raised in Layton, Utah, and moved to Tooele 28 years ago when he got a job with Detroit Diesel. He currently lives in Tooele with his wife of 29 years, and commutes to Hill each day. Together, they have three daughters and two grandchildren.
Travis and his family are lovers of the great outdoors and dry camp whenever they get the chance. Dry camping is different from regular camping because it involves camping “off-the-grid.”
“I enjoy nature and appreciate what being in the outdoors brings to life,” he said. “There’s nothing better than being with friends and family in the outdoors, riding four-wheelers, shooting guns, and enjoying a good old campfire.”
He said it’s important to care for the environment, and he and his family can often be found cleaning up garbage along the trails and camping areas.
Travis enjoys fitness, weight training and eating clean, and he recently began participating in Spartan races. Spartan races are like most races, except there are obstacles to overcome within the race. These obstacles could be things like crawling through mud, swinging over water, and climbing over walls. Travis has participated in two races so far, one at Snow Basin and another in Arizona. He has quickly found success, finishing 14th out of 92 participants in his age group at Snow Basin and fourth out of 54 participants in his age group in Arizona.
Above all, Travis is a thankful and thoughtful individual. He considers his greatest achievement since he started working at Hill is that he has had the opportunity to receive education and training, mentorship, and coaching. His goal is to pass on what he learns to those who follow in his footsteps.
