Phlebotomy grants for military spouses available through A&FRC to Davis Area Technical College Published April 21, 2011 By Sarah Hanych Airman and Family Readiness Center Community Readiness Technician HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center was chosen in January to receive a $4,000 grant for the Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) Spouse Education Grant Program. This year the grant is available for the area of phlebotomy at Davis Applied Technology College. This course consists of obtaining a better understanding of the body systems and various lab tests, and performing venipunctures accurately. The Utah Department of Workforce Services predicts that between 2008 and 2018 there will be a 17 percent increase in demand for this field in the state of Utah, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 34 percent increase from 2008 to 2018 in the United States. An entrance exam is required before starting with DATC. If you have interests in other areas, there are other opportunities available at DATC. The AFAS program supports Air Force families by providing spouses with education in portable careers which will assist in attaining steady employment despite location. Each year, Air Force bases around the world have a chance to submit an educational program grant for spouses from AFAS. This is the third year, Hill Air Force Base has been chosen for the grant and A&FRC and AFAS can once again assist Hill Air Force Base spouses with this opportunity. AFAS primarily supports Air Force members and their families with loans and grants in emergency situations. AFAS was founded with the motivation that the Air Force took care of its own. After World War II, AFAS expanded its services and established educational programs including the HAP Arnold Education Grant, Spouse Tuition Assistance Program (available for those outside of the continental United States) and the Spouse Employment Program. For more information on the educational grant and other details, call the A&FRC at (801) 777-4681.
