AFAF reaches $25,885 so far Published April 21, 2011 By Mary Lou Gorny Hilltop Times editor HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- The Air Force Assistance Fund has reached $25,885 in its push to goal of $77,300 or 33.46 percent. Sarah Hanych, of the Airman and Family Readiness Center, who assists 1st Lt. Nathan Greiner, installation AFAF project officer, said, "The goal is to have half of all active duty participate and to reach $77,300." She said that if the base meets its goal, an additional $2,500 would be distributed to the base as community enhancement. In her work at the Airman and Family Readiness Center, Hanych sees the good done through the Falcon Loans and regular loans the Air Force Aid Society makes available to military members. In addition to these avenues, grants are available in times of tragic situations such as unexpected death and major family crises. Deployed members who give power of attorney to their spouses or other family members can find assurance that these benefits are available to their families as well, even though they are away from home, she said. Oftentimes, she said, they see members who are facing significant vehicle repairs; sometimes it's a situation where there is a crisis and families need help with rent, utilities or help with a special needs child. "There are a lot of different circumstances and we can take those into consideration," she said. The Lemay Foundation, the Air Force Village and the Air Force Enlisted Village also receive funds through the AFAF campaign. The AFAF is prohibited from being a member of the Combined Federal Campaign because its donations are strictly for military, said Hanych in explaining why it's a separate campaign.
