LOA awards $3,000 in scholarships Published July 5, 2011 By Anne Morrison Hilltop Times Staff HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- Five high school students received scholarships on June 24 from the Hill Air Force Base Wasatch Chapter of the Logistics Officers Association during its annual scholarship luncheon. Maj. Gen. Andrew Busch, Ogden Air Logistics Center, and Brig. Gen. Mark Atkinson, director of Logistics, Headquarters Air Combat Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va., were in attendance. Atkinson provided comments to over 65 LOA members, Hill AFB leaders, sponsors, award winners and parents. He congratulated the winners, adding that the No. 1 thing on his heart is to train up the next generation to do what's being done and better. Atkinson spoke also of the strength of Hill's LOA chapter, adding that he thinks the future is bright for the Air Force because of the logistics work at Hill Air Force Base. The winners of the scholarships were required to compose an essay analyzing logistical challenges and successes within the Air Force. Breanne DeMar won the $600 scholarship for writing on the Berlin Airlift. When asked about what she was going to put the money towards, DeMar chuckled, saying she wasn't expecting to win anything. "To be honest, I've never held $600 before," DeMar said, "I'm hoping to get a soccer scholarship, so I'll use the money for books." Other topics included differences between Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom, the Honda Point tragedy, and the winning subject was on the military exit strategy out of Iraq. The scholarship programs are part of the national LOA and are handed out on the high school level, bachelor's degree level and the master's degree level and range in award money. Those eligible for the scholarship are members of the LOA, high school- aged children of members, and all enlisted members of the armed forces. The winners and their scholarship amounts are: Gianni Covacci: $1,200 Carissa Flinders: $800 Breanne DeMar: $600 Paige Myers: $300 Carrie Myers: $100 The Hill LOA contributed $2,000 it raised from a fundraiser to the national LOA scholarship fund. The chapter recognized its sponsors and thanked them for their contributions.
