The Installation Safety Office is offering a Basic Rider Course2 (BRC2) (formerly Experienced Rider Course) on Friday, July 29, just for the ladies. The course will be facilitated by two female Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) certified RiderCoaches.

This course is approved official training for military, Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) and Department of Defense civilians; however, leave is required for contractors. Our MSF courses are also free of charge to eligible riders. If you are interested in "refreshing" your motorcycle skills, sign up for the course today. You will have the opportunity to learn life saving skills, street strategies and riding techniques.

If you ride often and you feel comfortable on your motorcycle, the BRC2 is a great refresher course for those who haven't completed a MSF course in awhile. In order to be the best and safest at what motorcyclists do, we need to continue the learning process and keep our skill levels at their peak. This course will help you achieve this goal. We are never too old or talented to benefit from the learning process.

Completing a MSF course will help to polish your emergency skills to help you maneuver out of harm's way. It is very important to leave yourself a way out of every situation while sharing the road with vehicles. Learning these emergency maneuvers on a closed range is critical since you don't have any traffic following directly behind you. This safety margin will allow you the opportunity to learn and practice these life saving skills without the threat of collision and will safely help you prepare yourself for the open road.

Here is a great example of why we constantly need to be practicing our skills to keep our riding techniques at their very best at all times. One of our recent "Women Only" Basic Rider students had to use a "quick stop" maneuver technique. Here is her account of the near miss:

"There was a car sitting in the left turn lane with the left turn signal activated, with the intent of turning into a strip mall. The individual decided that they wanted to turn right instead. They crossed right from the left turn lane over two lanes of traffic into the driveway on the right. I was in the outside lane and had to perform a "quick stop" maneuver to keep from being hit by the car. The vehicle didn't even slow down. I was within a foot and a half of hitting the car. Since I was clearing the intersection my speed was around 30 to 35 mph. Fortunately there was no vehicle behind me or there would have been a T-bone accident with me in the middle. As a result of the Basic Rider Course I completed I gained the ability to properly negotiate a quick stop maneuver which probably saved my life."

The Installation Safety Office would like to thank all of the ladies who participated in our Women Only Basic Rider Course on July 7 - 8.

To be eligible for the BRC2, you must be active duty military, NAF or DoD civilian employee, retiree, military reserve, military dependent or a base contractor. From a government computer go to the following site to schedule your course:
