Crosswalk awareness important as access changes, new ones added Published Sept. 8, 2011 By Senior Airman Shanell Granger 75th Security Forces Squadron HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- Crosswalk awareness is a public awareness and knowledge of laws governing the use of crossing roads. A crosswalk or pedestrian crossing is a designated point on a road at which some means are employed to assist pedestrians wishing to cross. Security forces advise vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle users to acknowledge and to be aware of their responsibilities of new and current crosswalks around Hill Air Force Base. With so much construction at Hill, it is important that everyone is aware of new locations. On Wardleigh Road a crosswalk has been added with a signal light. Please be sure to pay attention when the light is yellow and be prepared to stop, and do not proceed until the light is off. Pedestrian crossings are often found at intersections, but may be located at other points on busy roads that would otherwise be too unsafe to cross without assistance due to vehicle numbers, speed or road widths. Be extremely cautious around community installed crosswalks where large numbers of pedestrians are attempting to cross or cross regularly. Eight things to remember 1. When traffic-control signals are not in place or not in operation, the operator of the vehicle shall yield the right-of-way by slowing down or stopping if necessary. 41-6a-1002/Utah Traffic Code. 2. A pedestrian crossing a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles on the roadway. 41-6a-1003. 3. Look left and right before crossing. 4. Cross only at marked crosswalks or intersections. 5. Obey all traffic signals 6. Drivers must alert to all pedestrian movement and be prepared to stop. 7. Just because you're standing on the curb does not mean traffic must stop. 8. Only walk when directed by crosswalk signal and stop when directed.
