HILL AFB, Utah -- While Utah’s winter snow blankets the landscape each year, our water challenges never take a seasonal break. The record snowpack of 2023 helped replenish many of our reservoirs and lakes, but since then, summer and fall precipitation has been lower than needed across most of the state.
With Utah’s arid climate and one of the nation’s lowest relative humidity levels, we rely heavily on winter snowpack as a “frozen reservoir” to gradually release water through the spring. When precipitation falls short, we face heightened risks of drought, which impacts everything from our drinking water to local ecosystems and our quality of life.
Recognizing these stakes, the U.S. Air Force has committed to sustainable water practices, emphasizing that preserving water today is crucial to readiness and resilience for future generations. As Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force Nancy Balkus said, “Balancing water needs for daily operations, training, and residential use is critical to mission readiness.” Through resources like the Air Force Water Conservation Guidebook, they encourage proactive measures across all seasons, reminding us that everyone has a role to play.
There are countless ways to contribute to water conservation right at home. Simple changes like turning off outdoor irrigation, fixing leaky faucets, and running full loads in dishwashers and washing machines can collectively make a big impact. And while these actions may seem small, together they help reduce strain on Utah’s water resources.
To make conservation easier, Utah offers rebates and incentives for homeowners who upgrade to water-efficient systems. Programs include rebates for smart irrigation controllers, toilet upgrades, and even incentives for replacing traditional lawns with drought-resistant landscaping. Taking part in these programs benefits your household and our broader community, ensuring more water security for everyone.
Mother Nature has done her part this past winter—now let’s do ours. Join the movement to conserve water at Utah Water Savers, explore rebate opportunities, and let’s make every drop count. In Utah, we’re always either in a drought or preparing for the next one, so let’s use our water wisely today for a more resilient tomorrow.
