Need for vehicle charging stations grows at Hill

With the growing number of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) on base, including both fully electric and plug-in hybrids, there is an increasing need for vehicle charging accessibility while ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

There are a few chargers on base for government vehicles only.  Charging of privately owned vehicles (POVs) is not allowed at Hill AFB, except in privatized housing.  Leadership is working on improving the ability to not only add charging capabilities for the growing government fleet of ZEVs, but also to allow POV charging accessibility.

Hill is collaborating with the Air Force’s Department of Environment, Safety, and Infrastructure to evaluate the non-tactical government fleet and identify vehicles suitable for transition to ZEV, as well as the infrastructure needed to support charging of those vehicles. Once the charging infrastructure is installed, suitable vehicles will be transitioned to ZEV as they become eligible for replacement.

The charging stations planned for installation will also be capable of facilitating POV charging. Leadership will work on determining specific parameters associated with allowing POV charging, such as time of day that POVs are allowed to charge, to ensure there is no impact to federal fleet charging ability.

Charging POVs without reimbursement to the government is considered theft of a government service and can range from a misdemeanor to a felony based on the total value of the service. Currently, a means for collecting reimbursement for POV charging is not available at Hill.

Any questions regarding electric vehicle charging on base can be sent to 75CEG.CENPE.HillEnergy@us.af.mil. Tenants in privatized housing may reach out to Boyer Hill to request a charger be installed and details on associated costs.
