  • 388th Fighter Wing focuses on F-35A operational capabilities, mission readiness

Over the summer, all three squadrons — nearly 70 F-35A aircraft — were operating away from home station. They conducted operations in nine different countries on three separate continents, supporting multiple combatant commanders. One squadron supported a European Theater Support Package, another squadron conducted off-station operations at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, while Hill’s runway was under construction, and one squadron is currently conducting the first F-35A combat deployment.
  • US, UAE fly to build interoperability

The U.S Air Force and the United Arab Emirates Air Force join together for a partnering flight in the U.S. Central Command's area of responsibility. This flight was conducted to build military-to-military relationships and interoperability with the UAE.
  • Hill’s F-35A and airmen mastering first Pacific deployment

More than 300 men and women of the 388th and 419th Fighter Wings and 12 F-35As are conducting business for the next six months on the subtropical Japanese island of Okinawa during a deployment known as a Theater Security Package. Their business is to fly the F-35A, integrate with Kadena Air Base’s F-15Cs and other assets and demonstrate the continuing U.S. commitment to stability and security in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region—and they’re excited to do it. “We were very excited to find out we were coming here,” said Lt. Col. “Scout” Johnston, 34th Fighter Squadron commander. “It’s a wonderful place with wonderful people and the facilities are excellent. The airspace is phenomenal. This allows us to have great training opportunities and integration with other Air Force assets as well as with the Navy and Marine Corps and hopefully with the Japanese Self-defense force. So, we are excited to be here.”
  • Hill F-35s deploy overseas for second time

Twelve F-35A Lightning II aircraft and approximately 300 Team Hill Airmen from the active-duty 388th Fighter Wing and Reserve 419th Fighter Wing here departed Oct. 30, 2017, for a six-month deployment to Japan.
  • F-35As fly in weapons evaluation

  • F-35As fly in formation above UTTR

F-35A Lightning II aircraft from the 388th Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, fly in formation after refueling over the Utah Test and Training Range, March 30.
  • Youngest maintainer at Red Flag launches America’s youngest jet

The future belongs to the young. Nathan Kosters, the youngest F-35 crew chief in the 34th Aircraft Maintenance Unit, was born in 1996. “The Macerana” was No. 1 on the charts (somehow), “Independence Day” topped the box office and the F-16 Fighting Falcon had already been flying for 22 years.
  • Interoperability is key to F-35A combat success

The F-35A Lightning II can carry thousands of pounds of bombs, but its ability to gather and share information is just as deadly.
  • F-35A, maintainers proving reliable at Red Flag

When it comes to the F-35A, much is made of the edge its fifth-generation technology gives pilots, but America’s newest fighter aircraft is also proving capable in the hands of maintainers.
