At right, Senior Airman Michael Tumang, 75th Security Forces Squadron, receives a Purple Heart from Col. Dan Cornelius, then commander of the 75th Air Base Wing, during a ceremony April 30, 2026, at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. Tumang received the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in action Jan. 20, 2024, during a deployment to al-Asad Air Base, Iraq. While serving on a Quick Response Force during a hostile indirect-fire attack, a 122 mm rocket impacted near Tumang’s position. Despite being knocked to the ground and sustaining blast injuries, Tumang completed a post-attack sweep of the airfield before seeking medical care. (U.S. Air Force photo by R. Nial Bradshaw).
