Rescue Squadrons at Hill AFB during the 1970s
Hill AFB hosted the Headquarters of the 40th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, along with its Detachment 4, from July 1978 to November 1987. Highly decorated for actions in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, the 40th ARRS played an instrumental role in saving numerous lives in the Intermountain Region while operating at Hill AFB. This unit’s history is part of the lineage of the currently operating 40th Helicopter Squadron, stationed at Malmstrom AFB, Montana.
