Rescue Squadrons at Hill AFB during the 1970s
During the late 1970s, Hill AFB consecutively hosted several rescue and recovery helicopter detachments. These units flew variants of the Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, often nicknamed the “Huey” due to the aircraft’s first designation as the HU-1. Even after its redesignation to UH-1, the nickname stuck.
