Sopwith Camel

On Oct. 10th, the eventual winner of the Air Race, Lt. “Parson” Maynard landed at Salt Lake City. The Baptist minister-turned-aviator, along with his traveling companion “Trixie” the German shepherd, told the crowd that the worst part of the trip was between Rawlins, Wyoming and Buena Vista field, where it was “extremely cold over the mountains.” The “parson” had red eyes from the wind and cold and was almost deaf from the Liberty engine. Mechanics at Buena Vista field had to shout their questions to the pilots on the ground. Maynard had been an Army aviator in France, and held the world looping record, with 318 consecutive loops in 66 minutes performed in a Sopwith Camel.
