Team Hill has two earn chief master sergeant rank

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah --  Great news for two members of Team Hill on Nov. 14, one from 75th Operations Support Squadron and the other from the 388th Maintenance Group, earned the right to be in the top one percent of the enlisted force and to be called "Chief."

Senior Master Sgts. Stanley Leigh, 75th Operations Support Squadron, and Gail Kemeliotis, 388th Maintenance Group, are the newest noncommissioned officers on Hill AFB to earn their chief stripes.

"Earning those Chief stripes really isn't about reaching the pinnacle of the enlisted ranks," said Chief Master Sgt. Jason France, 75th Air Base Wing Command Chief. "It's about servant leadership, about being in a better position to take care of our Airmen."

Congress created the super grades as a part of the Career Compensation Act of 1958 enabling promotions above E-7. The basic law provided that each service could promote two percent of its enlisted force to E-8, or senior master sergeant, and one percent to E-9, a chief master sergeant.

There were 2,023 senior master sergeants eligible for promotion to chief, 400 were selected; a 19.77 percent selection rate, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced on Nov. 18.

Those selected will be promoted according to their promotion sequence number beginning in January. Selections are tentative until the data verification process is complete, which is no later than 10 days after the promotion release date. Airman will be notified if their selection is in question.

The average score for those selected was 671.81, with an average time in grade of 3.08 years and time in service of 22.24 years. The average score for enlisted performance reports was 135. Average decorations score was 24.30, and the average promotion fitness exam score was 76.31. The average board score was 388.14.

"Those stripes belong to our Airmen, not the Chief wearing them," said France.
