Too much cholesterol in the blood is one of the main risk factors for heart disease and stroke -- two leading causes of death in the United States. One way to prevent these diseases is to detect high cholesterol and treat it when it is found.

According to the CDC, seventy-one million American adults have high cholesterol, but only one-third of them have the condition under control. There is no better time than today to resolve to get your cholesterol screened.

Screening is the key to detecting high cholesterol. Because high cholesterol does not have symptoms, many people do not know that their cholesterol is too high.

If you are a DoD civilian employee, Hill AFB's Civilian Health Promotion Services can do a simple blood test to check your cholesterol level. It is recommended that adults aged 20 years or older have their cholesterol checked every 5 years, or more often if you are at a high risk.

Learn what steps you can take to prevent or treat high cholesterol by joining CHPS for Cholesterol Education this month. Contact CHPS to sign up for classes or screenings.
