'Pay it forward' during AFAF campaign

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah --  Volunteers are needed to donate to the Air Force Assistance Fund by April 8.

The annual fund drive supports charitable organizations assisting active-duty, Guard, Reserve and retired service members and their dependents, including surviving spouses.

This year, Hill Air Force Base hopes to raise nearly $77,222.

First Lt. Ryan Lopinski and Senior Master Sgt. Tim Parkinson, AFAF project officers, said people won't find these charities in the Combined Federal Campaign lineup.

The AFAF supports four charities that are dedicated to caring for Airmen: the Air Force Aid Society, Air Force Village, The General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation and the Air Force Enlisted Village.

Installations historically average a 19 percent to 30 percent participation rate from the active-duty population for the AFAF campaign. But 75th Air Base Wing and Installation Commander Col. Ron Jolly believes Hill AFB is above average.

"I hope that everybody gives serious consideration to giving to these four worthy charities," Jolly said. "Just a few dollars a month from your paycheck will ensure your fellow Airmen will have the assistance they need when they need it most.  And, you never know, you may just find in the future that you have 'paid it forward,' and our AFAF charities will be there for you should you need them."

Key employees supporting the drive will visit works center during the campaign to educate people about the charities, answer questions and give employees an opportunity to donate.

The AFAF project officers said employees are encouraged to get involved by way of helping or donating. Private organizations and units are invited to be creative and have fun with fundraisers over the next six weeks.

"The AFAF campaign gives us all another opportunity to help our fellow Airmen when they need it most," Jolly said. "Thank you for continuing our proud tradition in our 'Commitment to Caring' through giving to the AFAF campaign."
