Proclamation signing to kick off week full of Air Force activities

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- Air Force Week Salt Lake City 2009 will officially begin June 1 at the proclamation signing ceremony to be held on the south steps of the Utah State Capitol Building.

The event is open to the public with pre-ceremony activities to begin at 8:30 a.m. and will feature music and the national anthem performed by the U.S. Air Force's Stellar Brass Band, a USAF Honor Guard Drill Team routine and an F-16 fly-by.

The official ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. where Gov. Jon Huntsman is expected to officially proclaim June 1-7 as Air Force Week Salt Lake City 2009. Huntsman will be assisted by Secretary of the U.S. Air Force Michael B. Donley and other USAF and Utah state dignitaries.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for two communities, the Air Force and the state of Utah, who rely heavily on one another to fully understand what each one is about," said Col. Patrick Higby, 75th Air Base Wing commander. "We look forward to demonstrating what the Air Force does along with hearing the comments and concerns of those around us."

Once the official proclamation is signed, other Air Force Week Salt Lake City events will be held that day. Our Nation's Defenders Showcase, which will run until June 3, will open at 10 a.m. at Pioneer Park and will go until 6 p.m. Highlights of the showcase include military displays, the Air Force Honor Guard and Drill Team demonstrations, the Air Force Academy Falcon and Hill AFB's own military working dog demonstrations.

The Air Force Art Exhibit will also open that afternoon from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Public Library and will be on display until June 5.

The free IMAX Movie "Fighter Pilot" will begin showing at the Clark Planetarium until June 3, featuring Hill AFB's pilots who will be available to answer questions and take photos.

That evening, the Airman's Opener game with the Salt Lake Bees baseball team will take place at Spring Mobile Ballpark. Pre-game activities will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will feature the USAF Academy Band "Pegasus," the USAF Drill Team, the USAF Monster Truck and USAF NASCAR. The ballgame will begin at 6:30 p.m. when the Air Force Academy Wings of Blue Parachute Team will jump into the stadium to deliver the game ball to Gen. Donald J. Hoffman, Air Force Materiel Command commander, for the opening pitch.
