"Followership" -- to lead, you must first be able to follow for without followers, there can be no leaders.

One point we often overlook concerning successful leaders is that they are successful followers first.

To be a good follower, one will need to develop the following qualities:

Loyalty -- always be loyal to your leader, whether or not you agree with them.

Initiative -- do what must be done without waiting to be told.

Dependability -- be dependable. The person in charge must have help in carrying out the mission. The leader must be able to depend on the followers to get the job done. Dependable followers increase the efficiency of the organization and the command.

Today's workers have an almost impossible task of keeping up with changing technology, while at the same time coping with the demands of leadership. The knowledge, skills and abilities the subordinates of today have must offer opportunities for management to maximize work center effectiveness. We often hear the expression, "People are our most valuable resource." Employees provide resources to leadership by nurturing and developing their capabilities and fostering their willingness to improve organizational effectiveness.

Followers must listen and respond to the ideas and needs of their leaders, and leaders are similarly required to listen and respond to the ideas and needs of their followers. The success of every organization depends on the base of loyal, capable and dependable followers.

Everyone wants to be a part of an efficient organization that functions smoothly. The key to unit efficiency is good followers. Developing your followership skills will make your organization a successful, enjoyable place to work.
