Shade will be an important feature of the Salute to Our Nation's Defenders Picnic, organizers report. In addition to water-themed bouncy toys, there will be camouflage netting, and refreshing watermelon and cool desserts featured.

The picnic, sponsored annually by the Top of Utah Military Affairs Committee, is from 3-7 p.m. July 12 with food served from 3-6 p.m. at Centennial Park. The event is for military members -- active duty, Reserve and Guard -- and their families.

"We would love to see more of our Airmen and their families," said Barbara Riddle, chairwoman of the committee. "That would bring a great deal of joy to us as a committee to have strong participation."

"Gastronomy is very excited about the food they are bringing and serving. Wasatch Brewery will be there with adult beverages and we will have all kinds of soft drinks, water, ice cream and watermelon."

Riddle requests that military members get an approximate count to their first sergeants so planners can be better prepared to serve their guests. The picnic features such high-end picnic fare as beef brisket and hot wings.

An additional three-piece band has been added in addition to the regular band.

Riddle reports that the Military Affairs Committee is receiving great support. "Everybody is excited to be there on July 12 and roll out a first-class picnic."
