HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah -- A Hill Airman will put his military duties on hold for a few days to compete in the World Powerlifting Congress World Cup Aug. 29-31 in Idaho Falls.
Senior Airman Brandon Higgins, a materiel manager with the 388th Maintenance Group, started weightlifting seriously four years ago, and has recently started powerlifting. This will be his third competition and he’s been preparing intensely for it.
“I’ve been in prep for this competition for about 22 weeks, hitting the gym five to six days a week for two to three hours a day, as well as being on a strict and controlled diet,” he said.
He hopes to find even greater success than he did at his previous events, where he won several classes, earned some cash prizes and set some record in the military/fire/law enforcement class.
Higgins encourages anyone with an interest in lifting to pursue the hobby. He said being in the military hasn’t prevented him from pursuing powerlifting in any way.
“Even with working in the military, I am still able to train,” Higgins said. “Being disciplined is important as well as time management, which is a tough skill to master, but once you do it’s a very powerful tool that enables success.”
His long-term goal is to qualify for the Sheffield Powerlifting Championships in England, a high-profile competition that showcases the world’s top powerlifters and offers the largest prize fund in the sport.
