LEGAL ASSISTANCE

Legal Assistance Mission
In accordance with Air Force Instruction 51-504, Legal Assistance, Notary & Preventive Law Programs, dated Oct. 27, 2003, the purpose or mission of the legal assistance program is two-fold. Mission-Related Legal Assistance is to ensure that the legal difficulties of military members do not adversely affect command effectiveness or readiness. The second purpose of the legal assistance program is Non-Mission Related Legal Assistance. Non-Mission Related Legal Assistance is to assist certain categories of beneficiaries (as resources permit).
Eligibility
Eligible beneficiaries include the following: Members of the armed forces on active duty; Retired personnel; Family members of active duty members and retired personnel, including unremarried former spouses entitled to an identification card; and, Reservists and National Guard members on federal active duty pursuant to Title 10, United States Code, and their family members entitled to identification cards. Civil Service employees and civilians are not eligible for legal assistance and notary service unless they fall under the criteria listed above.

Servicemembers' Civil Relief Act (SCRA) (50 U.S.C. App. ยง 501-593)
Veterans' reemployment rights
Casualty affairs
Landlord-tenant and lease issues
Tax assistance
Involuntary allotment issues
Consumer affairs
Automotive purchases
Lemon Law
Domestic relations
Adoption/Change of name
Residence / Domicile
Negligence/Torts
Real Estate (However, JAGs may not draft/review sales or closing documents)
Matters JAGs will generally NOT provide advice on
Bankruptcy
Pre-Nuptial Agreements
Naturalization/Immigration
Law of Armed Conflict issues (exception: general guidance)
Matters in which the Air Force has an official interest
Matters JAGs CANNOT provide advice on
Matters involving private organizations
Complaints of Wrongs (Art 138, UCMJ)
EPR/OPR Appeals
Medical Disability Separations
Military Pay Problems
Advice on private business matters
Civilian and military criminal matters
Personal Commercial Solicitation
ID Cards and military dependent privileges
Complicated wills, trusts and estates
Equal opportunity treatment complaints
Complaints and transportation of household goods
Admin Discharges
Personal Fundraising
Matters on which the member is represented by a civilian attorney
Contractor Complaints
Drafting or revising real estate sale or closing documents
Drafting or revising separation agreements or divorce decrees
