Safety Flash: Watch for pedestrians crossing the road near the Youth Center

A series of near-miss accidents at the intersection of 6th Street and Liberty Way near the Youth Center has safety officials asking motorists to slow down and stay alert.

The close calls involve vehicles and pedestrians crossing the street at the intersection. As a signal to motorists to watch out, cones are placed in the intersection’s crosswalk during peak hours.

Last year, a man was severely injured and had to be transported to a nearby hospital when he was hit by a moving vehicle at the intersection while in the crosswalk.

School-aged children are especially vulnerable at the intersection because they may not understand key traffic safety rules.

As a result of the recent incidents, 75th Security Forces Squadron will be increasing speed and crosswalk enforcement at the intersection.

A motorist must come to a complete stop when a crosswalk is in use and not put their vehicle in motion until the last person is out of the crosswalk.

Safety flashes are distributed as part of the installation's mishap prevention program. For more information or to report a base safety issue, please contact the 75th ABW Safety Office at 801-777-SAFE (7233).
