AFSC Commander Message on “Diversity and Inclusion”

Teammates,

Recent events have stimulated a necessary and overdue conversation about “Diversity and Inclusion” throughout all sectors of society, including our AFSC workplace.

...

Your voice is an important contribution to the healthy discourse that is happening across the nation today. Perhaps even more important than our voices are our ears. Actively listening to points of view and experiences of others will lead to open, respectful dialogue and a better understanding of your coworkers.

We are a team of 40,000 diverse individuals, working together for a common mission. We must also have a common vision for a workplace that has no room for division and hate.

Going forward, AFSC will embrace the call to action outlined by Gen Goldfein, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and CMSgt Wright, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force:

• Take ownership
• Listen
• Take meaningful action.

I am convinced that “Diversity and Inclusion” are inherent to Air Force Core Values. Adherence to Integrity, Service and Excellence correctly sets high expectations for how we interact with one another. I am proud this is our Air Force culture.

You will soon have an opportunity to participate in voluntary “sensing” sessions being held at squadron level or staff equivalent. These may involve difficult, but necessary, conversations. I hope each of you will contribute.

Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to improve our Air Force, communities and nation. Please join me by committing to doing the hard but indispensable work to create a culture of inclusion and understanding.

Thank you.
Lt Gen Gene Kirkland
